Kevorkian for Congress

Kevorkian, 79, said he plans to run without party affiliation for the 9th District seat in Michigan now held by Republican Joe Knollenberg, who is running for re-election, The Oakland Press reported Wednesday.

"We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," Kevorkian said. He said he would say more about his candidacy next week.

I basically agree with this guy:

Oakland County Prosecutor Dave Gorcyca, whose office was responsible for sending Kevorkian to prison, said it was "probably more of a publicity stunt."

Let's assume for the sake of debate that kevorkian has a good chance of winning his seat, that it wasn't just a publicity stunt (which is most likely is of some sort, even just to make a point).

Having grown up in Michigan, only spending the last few years elsewhere for college, I remember when Kevorkian was on trial and the discussions that were had about what he'd done. While I'm not sure if he could win the election, I think that there are enough people in the district that would vote for him, so he could affect the outcome of the election.

Kevorkian plans to focus on prison reform and bringing integrity to the government, Holmes said.

Also who better to talk about prison reform than a former prisoner.

I think I agree with you, he may not be able to win, but he can drum up enough support to cause serious discussion.

Let's pretend though he manages to win. Do you think it'd be good or bad? Any insights into this that an outsider from Colorado might not have?

Well, in the past, the debates were about whether doctors should be legally able to put an end to someone's life if the person and/or their family wanted it done. Now, I won't get into details, that can be another thread, but from his past actions, I believe Kevorkian to be a man who acts on his beliefs. And I think we could use more politicians like that.

Also, and this is where we assume that he wins, it shows that anyone, regardless of who they are and of their past, can be elected into office. And if that is not a good thing then I don't know what is.

I believe that if he wins, he will win because he is an activist who shares the people's views. That alone would vindicate him from his criminal charge.
